The Wolf King: the story behind the name

Muhammad ibn Mardanís, known to Christians as the Wolf King, ruled the kingdom of Murcia for twenty-five years in the 12th century, successfully resisting the Almohad Empire and turning the city into one of the most prosperous centres of al-Andalus.

During his reign the Castillejo de Monteagudo, his pleasure palace, was built, and the irrigation systems that gave rise to today's Murcian huerta around Camper Park Rey Lobo were developed. He was a pragmatic ruler, combining diplomacy, Mediterranean trade and a remarkable openness between Christian and Muslim cultures.

Rey Lobo Experience takes its name and its spirit from him: a frontier land turned into a place of encounter, culture and wellbeing. Our guided tours trace that historical legacy, and our wellness services are enjoyed at the foot of the very castle he had built.
